We, at Boglar Champ, grow pleurotus, also called oyster mushrooms and champignon mushrooms, two of the most widely used mushrooms in the world.
In the first article from this series (link) I introduced you the pleurotus mushroom and the fungi in general, now, by the present article I brought you some interesting facts about the champignon mushroom.
there is a wide variety of champignon mushrooms, but we grow at our fungi farm the Agarics bisporus, this is the Latin for the two-spores champignon, the epithet bitorquis, in Latin mean that they also have two collars
the commercially sold button mushrooms are also to be found in the wild and are commonly called sidewalk mushrooms because of their habit of growing by sidewalks, they even pop up through the asphalt
the most common genus of the Agaricus that grow wild, are the Agaricus campestris and Agaricus arvensis;
there are also poisonous champignons, that turn yellow when bruised or cut, these are the Yellow Strainers, the Agaricus xanthodermus that are part of the same mushroom family of the Agaricus. Other two mushrooms of the same family are the Agaricus phaeolepidotus and the Agaricus moelleri, they also have an unpleasant smell and taste and their consumption causes vomiting and diarrhea;
Button mushrooms are an excellent source of selenium, vitamins B2, B3, B5, copper, potassium and phosphorus;
There are also a range of mouthwatering recipes with mushrooms from classic mushroom risotto and creamy stroganoff to mushroom soups, wellingtons, and pies, and last but not least mushrooms are most fit for school menus and take away meals for students;
